Top Ten Tuesday

Here is a link to the Top Ten Tuesday information from the Broke and the Bookish.

This week's theme is Top ten book cover trends I like or dislike. I will be breaking this into five likes and five dislikes.

Likes:
1. Mostly-text covers
2. Swirl designs or doodles
3. Illustrations
4. Light colors (or any nice color scheme!)
5. Matching series covers

Dislikes:
1. Awkwardly placed text
2. Poorly edited photo
3. Disorganized or cluttered
4. Poor quality photo
5. Lacks a nice color scheme or font

  1. I admire swirling patterns and doodles on a cover, too. Have you seen the cover for Troika (Adam Pelzman)? It somehow manages subtle and bold at the same time.

  2. I hadn't seen it before, but just looked it up on Goodreads - I really love that design!

  3. What's an example of a book with awkwardly placed text? I'm just curious if you had a book in mind when writing it. :) Great list this week! I think text/typography seems to be the winning ticket for book covers!

  4. I think it happens most often in self-published works. I didn't have an example in mind but one I just found on Goodreads is here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/231962.The_Queen_of_Everything

I've seen worse, but didn't want to choose a self-published book - I don't want to create any bad publicity for struggling authors. Basically just titles or even author's names that seem randomly placed . . . It's difficult to explain and to be honest I'm overly picky about it!

Thank you and yes I've seen a lot of it! No surprise to me because the text is usually my favorite part of the cover.

  5. I somewhat agree with you on awkwardly placed text to the extent that I have to stare at the image several ways just to make sense of what the title of the book is! I guess I understand the creativity in it but man, so much work for just a title (discounting the fact that the title would be on the spine).

  6. Definitely true! I want to know title and author at first glance. I don't mind creativity but sometimes, even when you can tell the title, it just looks awkward in a certain spot.

  7. For sure! I've had lapses where I stare at a title (or just a word) and I begin to question if it's even spelled correctly. And so I stare some more...
