Discussion: Audiobooks

During my recent reading slump, I really got into audiobooks as a way to keep reading at least a little bit every day. For me it's usually a solution for when I'm too tired to read myself, but I have gotten into them as a way of multitasking as well. It's great to have an audiobook playing while doing boring tasks such as cleaning, I've learned.

I have been interested in this for some time, when I see others reading audiobooks. Personally, I have been sticking to classics, which can be found in so many places for free. I have an app on my iPad that I recently downloaded on my phone as well, in order to keep them more mobile.

So many people seem to purchase audiobooks, but I guess I'm not sure how. To me they are far too expensive and I haven't been able to find any low or sale prices, aside from Audible (I think that's $15 a month?) which I'm not really interested in.

Do you read audiobooks at all? If you do, are they free or purchased ones? Are there any cheap ones that I'm not aware of?

  1. I haven't listened to many audio books, except for excerpts of classics that I needed during my student teaching.

I do recommend them to students, though, especially those students who need help with reading. I had a whole list of websites I gave to my kids during student teaching so they could listen and read along.

You can purchase many on book websites like Amazon and Barnes and Noble, but they are so expensive. Most of them are around $30 each, which is ridiculous. That's almost double the price of the book.

    1. The price is half the reason I don't listen to more audiobooks, honestly. Sometimes you can find the ebook for a couple of dollars when the audiobooks are like $20-30!

    2. I know! It's completely insane.

I saw that Book Outlet had the audio book for Cress for like $7.99, so that's a steal. Other than that, the price is the killer. Like it's just a disc. Why so freaking expensive?

  2. The prices of audiobooks are totally ridiculous most of the time. I have memberships to Audible and Audiobooks.com - both are $15/month. It is a little steep but it's better than paying closer to $30 for the audio versions. Sometimes Audible has good book sales, too! I've gotten a lot of books for less than the cost of the e-book. Also, if you have a library card, they will often have audiobooks you can check out with an app instead of as CDs.

    1. I have heard about the library card thing, although I've yet to check it out :)

  3. I haven't ever listened to an audio book :-( For one thing they are super expensive, and I have always wanted to hold a book in my hands to read, although listening to an audio book would be nice to do once in a while if not for the expense.

    1. That's my problem as well. Especially since it's not something that I do very often, I just can't spend that much on an audiobook!

  4. I am obsessed with audiobooks! I use Audible and I also get some from publishers which helps my wallet so much. YA has some amazing audiobooks!
